Abstract

|
Purpose : The aim of this study was to assess differences in the stress, coping, mood and burden of spouses of women with breast cancer across the treatment phases.
Method : A descriptive study design was used. Data were collected at a university hospital located in Seoul for several days. Participants were recruited from the outpatient breast cancer clinic, the chemotherapy room, and the surgical ward for breast cancer. Permission to undertake this study was gained from the Ethics Committee of Seoul National University Hospital and informed consents from each participant were obtained prior to the study. The data from 163 participants were analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 WIN program.
Results : Significant differences in coping and burden of spouses were found across the treatment phases. However, there was no significant difference in the stress and mood of spouses. The mean score for coping was the highest in the follow-up phase, and the mean score for burden was the highest in the adjuvant phase.
Conclusion : Healthcare professionals need to understand the stress and burden of breast cancer patients’ usbands across the treatment phases, and future studies need to develop and evaluate nursing interventions.
